Anal Gland Expression

Dogs and cats have paired spherical sacs that sit next to the anus. These
sacs are called anal glands and they are usually the size of a grape.
They excrete a liquid substance that gives off a fishy odor. The sacs are
normally emptied during defecation. If these do not empty during normal
defecation the liquid may become thick and viscous. Occasionally they will
become impacted and may become infected.
If this conditions occurs you may notice your pet crying out when having a
bowel movement, shaking, chasing his tail or rubbing his bottom on the
ground. If you notice any of these signs it is time to have your pet
checked by the veterinarian. Please call our office and we will schedule
an exam.
